The Gulf Shores Zoo

This post is done to talk about the great time we had at the Gulf Shores Zoo.

First let me start out by saying we aren't zoo people. We have been to several and just have usually left underwhelmed. Our favorite zoo before now was the Topeka Zoo. I suppose that must mean we like small zoos where there might not be a lot of variety but things come more quickly and they are closer to you. I am sure that the enclosures aren't ideal for the animals, which leaves me with a slightly guilty feeling for prefering the small zoo.

When discussing our ocean visit, Jack said he wanted to see a sea turtle and a crocodile. Now, knowing that neither of these were likely, I set about trying to find ways to make it happen. I found the website for the Gulf Shore Zoo and decided that Reptile Encounter would be perfect for it.  It rained Friday morning, but the storm had passed and so we headed out. We went there and because of the rain, the encounter was closed.  We almost decided to leave. But we decided to stay, paid for the lemur experience and got a cup of food. And that's when the fun began.

We started out seeing this ugly duck. Jack tried to offer it some food, but it wasn't interested in much.

Next up was the lion. I was still pretty underwhelmed, but Jack wanted my phone so he could snap this pic.

Next up was a Bengal tiger who was sitting in a perfect place to see him up close.

Next came a good set of animals who wanted the food. There was this cute llama.

But Jack mostly loved the goat who liked who was super demanding and always seemed like he was trying to shake.

Next there were some deer who liked food, but they didnt hold Jack's interest.

Next we saw Charlie the Crocodile. He has been at the zoo since 1989 when he was rescued because he kept trying to take people's picnic baskets at a state park.  He wasn't moving much while we were there, but he was still a pretty amazing site to see. He is about 11 feet long. His eyes popping up from the water were pretty freaky.

Next we headed to see the black leopards. Jack was totally fascinated by these two, but I'm not sure why. The older cat did walk to us once, but there wasn't much action.

There were several smaller monkeys in the middle with animals to feed on the outside.

Aunt Jess, we were wondering if these were ugly enough to make your favorite animals lists. They look like should be a cousin to the tapir.

Here is a another angle just to help you decide.

Jack fed another burro. The girl in the enclosure was blowing bubbles at him, but he didn't care. I guess maybe he likes to play with them sometimes.

Next up was the highlight of the zoo. I wish we would have known how awesome it was going to be so we would have paid for Nick to be in there too. Here follows a picture overload from our lemur encounter.

We didn't walk much further and there was a baby kangaroo experience. Nick and Jack did this one. It was pretty awesome too. Here is our picture overload from that experience.

One had just used his back legs to hop away and Jack was literally taken aback but it's power.

They had one in a pouch you could hold. He was a bit heavy and awkward for Jack.

But Nick did well.

Jack decided he was going to get down on their level and try walking like them.

They also had an experience where you could play with Baby Bengal tigers, but that experience had over a month waiting  list. We were still able to see them and get only a wires cage away.

We looped back around and took a couple more pictures, including one of the mama of the baby lemurs that we had loved on.

As we were leaving, the male lion had came out and was walking around. He was quite the impressive beast.

I hope you've enjoyed our picture walk through our new favorite zoo.

A Week in Review (June 1-7)

A Week in Review (June 1-7)

Watched: A lot of movies since Jack was out of town. We went and saw Blended, which stars Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. While it wasn't a bit with critics, I liked it. I think you have to be older to enjoy it as it deals with issues you won't have had a chance to experience when you are younger. We also saw the new Xmen movie. It was okay at best. I kind of feel like they are all the same movie. We rented both Lost Vegas and Monuments Men from redbox. Lost Vegas gave us several laughs, especially since we had just been there. Monuments Men was a real bummer. As a huge fan of "based on a true story", I thought I was going to just love it, but I didn't. It was dreadfully boring.

Read: I finished up Scarlet.  In this second installment in the Lunar Series, I found myself preferring this noon over the first book because I enjoyed Scarlet's character more than Cinder's. This book really leaves you hanging. I don't feel like the author found a good starting point to introduce us to an entirely new set of characters. I am looking forward to seeing how she intertwines more new character. I also read Necessary  Lies. This was my first novel by Diane Chamberlain and is was such a compelling novel. It takes a look at the Eugenics program that was used in North Carolina until the mid 70's. This book focuses on a new naive social worker and some of the cases she takes on. It is set in the 60's. I loved the afterward in the novel. I think it makes the book all that much more believable.

Listened: I guess this is my post of talk about Vegas. ;) I could say that I listened to a symphony of languages as I sat upon a Duece bus. The mass transportation system works well, but it is not good for people who are in hurry.  I also listened to Nick "ooh and ahh" over the Penn and Teller stuff that was everywhere.  Their show was AMAZING. I would highly recommend anyone seeing it if they were in Vegas. I think if you have to get far away seats, that it wouldn't be as neat. Splurge on the VIP seating and you will not be disappointed.  I also listened to the sound of money going down the drain as I watched one gentleman place out $100 a spin on a roulette wheel and lose 9 times.  I also got to hear the eerie quite of a casino in the Wynn. It exuded money when you were in there. They even had a curving escalator. It was neat to look around, but both Nick and I felt that we should have been dressed nicely for just walking around.  While I was there, I also listened to a voicemail from one of my dear friends. She went in for her 20 week ultrasound and found out she was not just expecting her 4th child, but also her 5th and 6th! It was the biggest shock I got while in Vegas.

Made: The big decision to get Nick a new vehicle. He has known for a whole that the oil pan gasket needed replaced, which he said was going to be quite the PITA. The air conditioner coil wasn't constantly freezing up on him, so he would have to turn on the heat to melt it so he could have air. It whistled in the truck if you didn't have any air on. The four cylinders couldn't haul the boat we liked. But the icing was that the tranmission started to slip. It took us a while to find something that he wanted to pay a good chunk of money for.  I can't believe how much cars have went up since we bought mine.  He chose a 2012 White Nissan Pathfinder. He had a chance at a 2014, but just didn't like the body style as much.  He looks pretty good driving it. It gets about the same gas mileage as his truck was. :) He is pretty proud of it.

Felt: Thankfuk that I have a handy husband. He replaced both the struts and shocks on my car for me. Apparently one of my curb checks must have been pretty rough because we also found out that I had a lower ball joint that was broken.  None of these jobs were very easy but he saved us over a $1,000 doing it himself.  I really hope Jack learns to be handy too.

Planned: To start eating through the freezer so that we can be a little more prepared if we get the call that they won the bid. But....we just ate out every meal. Hopefully we will be better once we get Jack back with us.

Loved: Spending a whole week dating my hubby. It was like we were in college again. Because he took the entire week off of work, and Jack stayed at Grandma Denise's until Sunday, we had so much time just to be together.  Although I must say that we both missed Jack horribly and sometimes wondered what to do with ourselves. Not a problem when our boy is around.

Here are the pics for the week:

Not as much my story to tell, but I loved the fact that Valerie took Jack to an indoor football game so that he could see Isiah Barfield play again. Chewy, which is what we call her fiancĂ© Angel, even ordered him a Bombers shirt!  They waited after the game and got to talk with him again too. It was a pretty special moment for him.

A Week in Review (May 25-31)

A Week in Review (May 25-31)

Watched: A TBones game with Jack. He won free tickets through their reading minutes giveaway. It is a great little park to spend the afternoon at. We upgraded our seats from the berm to right behind home plate and only had to pay $11 extra. We spent a fair amount of time just exploring the park. He did enjoy the inflatable baseball tee. I wish KU would get one like that for the HyVee Hawk Zone.  We stayed until the end and were treated to an awesome fireworks show. You were so close to them it was like waiting for hours to get the best spot to a 4th of July show.  If weren't going to be in Wichita, I would totally do a game for fireworks around the 4th!

Read: Not very much of Scarlet(https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13206760-scarlet). I am enjoying more than Cinder (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11235712-cinder), but it just hasn't grabbed me enough to make me sit down and devour it.

Listened: To the sound of the engine as we headed to Las Vegas.  We have done an incredible amount of walking already. We have decided to use the bus system for getting around. We should have taken a bus transfer on our way from the airport, but we didn't really know and so we had to trek about 3/4 a mile with our luggage in 90 degree weather. We went back out that night and had some fun on the old strip. I am overall up about $70.  I am sure to lose that back and more. One Vegas tip, make sure you find comfortable walking shoes for all your outfits. I didn't and man almighty were my feet sore!

Made: Progress with Jack's flowers that he planted with Grandma Teri. He was so excited to see some green poking out of the brown dirt. I think he will be fine if nothing more comes from it. We've been watching them closely. They've almost doubled in size from the first picture.

Felt: So glad to see Nick when he landed at 11:45pm on Thursday night. Having him gone for so long was hard on everyone. He worked so hard while he was gone that you could just see the exhaustion written all over him. I am glad the bid is submitted and we are just in the waiting process now.

Planned: To go to WOF, so that Jack could ride the Monsoon for the first time.  This is the first year he has been tall enough and it didn't open until Memorial Day, so we couldn't do it while Grandma Teri was in town.  So we walked clear over there, only to find out it was closed. Well clearly this was unacceptable to Jack, so he just decided to splash around in the kiddie area with his althletic shorts on. No one seemed to mind and he got wet. He had me take a couple pictures. I posted a cute one below. He did have such a good time that we had to make a trip back to OOF the next day!

Loved: Watching Jack play the big brother roll. Our neighbor asked if we could watch their little girl while he mowed his yard. Jack was so thrilled. She was very talkative and Jack enjoyed her just looking at him. I hope he keeps that special space for babies.
